BALLAJURA schoolboy Andrew Buszan became interested in karate after watching films like Bruce Lee’s Way of the Dragon and The Karate Kid.

And like Mr Miyagi’s kimono, Andrew’s karate moves are 100 per cent pure silk.

The 10-year-old Ballajura Primary student has just returned from the Go-Kan-Ryu Karate World Cup in Melbourne, where he won a bronze medal in his age division.

Andrew said he was “thrilled” with his performance after coming up against some of the best young athletes in the world.

“It went really well – it was a great test to do a whole range of moves on your own in front of the judges,” he said.

“I learnt a lot about sportsmanship and felt I got a lot better, because I was up against different people – and they were all tough competition.”

A member of the WA state team, Andrew said he enjoyed the challenge of competing on a big stage.

“It was great to be there and it’s something I’d like to do again, for sure,” he said.

With the State Championships coming up later this month, the talented youngster said he would take “a lot of confidence” from his impressive placing at the World Cup.

“Each time you’re in a tournament, you learn different things and gain a lot of experience,” he said.

“I’m improving my flexibility and my moves are getting a bit better, so I’m hoping I can go a fair way in the sport.”
