THE three classrooms at the Montessori School in Kingsley (pictured), designed by Edgar Idle Wade Architects, are up for the Sustainability award.
Edgar Idle Wade associate director Dani Martin said the design brief for the buildings was to be environmentally sustainable within the bushland setting.
“The main structure of the buildings is stabilised earth fin walls and highly insulated timber framed stud walls with plywood cladding,” she said.
“All materials, finishes and colours were carefully selected to minimise ongoing maintenance and eliminate harmful off-gassing.
“Situating the building within the existing heavily wooded site, while limiting disruption to both the bushland and the schools’ occupants during the construction period were of utmost importance.”
