TREKKING through the Nepalese high country, lending a hand in orphanages and schools along the way, will be Lloyd Snook’s first experience of overseas travel.

“I have never been overseas before, let alone to a country like that, which has more people than Australia but is 10 times smaller,” the 14-year-old Wembley teenager said.

“It is something to look forward to this year and a great thing to do before heading into Year 11 and 12, so if things seem hard, we can think, ‘well, not compared to what we accomplished in Nepal’.”

He and fellow Year 10 student Tom Carlyon are among 12 Perth Modern School students heading to Nepal for 28 days in November.

They will travel with World Challenge, a non-profit organisation emphasising education through exploration and responsible travel.

“We will be working with lots of communities, carrying everything ourselves and paying our own way,” Lloyd said.

The first challenge is to raise $6500 each to fund the trip, which Lloyd and Tom hope to do with a quiz night in Floreat in a fortnight.

A cricket bat signed by Justin Langer is among the items already donated by local businesses.

The quiz night is on March 14 at Cambridge Croquet Club. Call 9387 3418 or 9339 3585.
